Yes. We maintain a substantial stock of the most commonly specified toolholding products at our UK facility in North Bradley, Wiltshire. For in-stock items, we aim to dispatch same day for orders placed before noon, and next working day for orders placed after noon.

Where a product needs to be ordered from our European manufacturing partners, we will give you a clear lead time at the point of enquiry and keep you updated throughout. For high-volume or repeat requirements, we can also arrange scheduled stock holdings to ensure continuity of supply for your production facility.

Yes, bespoke toolholding is one of our core capabilities. If a standard product does not meet your dimensional, performance or interface requirements, we can work with our manufacturing partners to produce a custom specification.

Common bespoke requirements include non-standard gauge lengths, unusual bore diameters, special flange configurations, customer-specific balance grades and combination holders for multi-process operations. Please contact us with your drawing or specification and we will confirm feasibility, pricing and lead time. There is no charge for an initial technical review.

Both hydraulic and shrink fit holders deliver significantly better runout and clamping performance than conventional collet or side-lock systems, but they work in different ways and suit different applications.

Hydraulic chucks use an internal oil chamber that, when pressurised via an adjustment screw, expands a thin-walled steel sleeve uniformly around the tool shank. They offer excellent runout (typically under 3 microns at the holder nose), strong vibration damping, and very fast tool changes with no specialist equipment required. They are particularly well suited to finishing operations and long-overhang work.

Shrink fit holders use thermal expansion: the holder bore is heated using an induction unit, the tool is inserted, and as the bore cools it contracts to grip the shank with exceptionally high clamping force. Runout is typically 1 to 2 microns. They are slimmer in profile than hydraulic chucks, making them ideal for deep-cavity work and five-axis applications where clearance is limited. Tool changes are slightly slower due to the heating and cooling cycle.

Yes. We are an authorised OTT-Jakob service and calibration centre, and we carry out precision balancing and calibration work for a wide range of toolholding assemblies.

Our calibration services are carried out to ISO standards, and we can issue documentation to support your quality management system. We also service and recondition hydraulic chucks, angle heads, speeders, and driven/static tooling from EWS and other manufacturers.

If you have toolholding that is underperforming, producing excessive vibration or showing signs of wear, contact us to discuss a service assessment. In many cases, reconditioning is a cost-effective alternative to replacement.

Yes, absolutely. We actively encourage site visits, particularly where you are considering a change of toolholding system, investigating a machining problem or evaluating new products such as the OTT-Jakob Power Check spindle monitoring range.

Our technical team can bring demonstration equipment, discuss your application requirements in detail and carry out trial cuts where your facility permits. We cover the whole of the UK mainland and aim to arrange visits within a few working days of your request.

Poorly maintained toolholding can be responsible for a significant proportion of machining problems that are often attributed to cutting tools, machine condition or programming. Common symptoms of toolholding issues include:

• Premature or inconsistent tool wear
• Poor surface finish that persists despite tool changes
• Chatter or vibration at specific spindle speeds
• Dimensional variation between components or across a batch
• Tool pullout during heavy cuts
• Unusual noise from the spindle area

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, a toolholding assessment is a sensible first step. We can advise remotely based on a description of your application, or visit your facility to carry out a more detailed evaluation. The OTT-Jakob Power Check can be used to monitor spindle health in real time and identify issues before they cause scrap or unplanned downtime, and we always recommend a comprehensive care and maintenance schedule is put in for your toolholders to maintain maximum performance.

Yes. High-speed machining places specific demands on toolholding in terms of balance grade, runout, clamping security and thermal stability, and we stock products specifically selected for HSM applications.

For high-speed work we generally recommend hydraulic or shrink fit holders pre-balanced to G2.5 or better. Unlike BT, SK, or ISO holders that use a 7/24 steep taper, HSK holders use a short, hollow taper that expands slightly when clamped into the spindle creating a dual contact making HSK the preference for high-speed work as it ensures maximum rigidity and precision.

Because of this design, HSK tapers are particularly well-suited for advanced machining centres where accuracy, repeatability, and high RPM stability are critical. They have become one of the most popular standards in aerospace, automotive, and precision manufacturing.
